Pipelines and operational facilties often require work to be done on active lines. Freeze plugs provide the ability to isolate a section requiring maintenance instead of purging the entire line. Using a “jacket” injected with liquid nitrogen we are able to create a freeze plug that isolates part of the line. Once work is completed, the “jacket” is removed and the plug thaws, allowing operations to return to normal.

Freeze plugs can also be used to locate small leaks during hydrotesting by reducing the length of pipeline by half with every isolation. Once the freeze plug is set, we are able to determine which side the leak is on, eliminating half the pipeline. This is repeated until you have isolated the section of pipe down to a reasonable length that can be exposed by a track hoe.
